It’s no accident that Fertility Road falls on Mother’s Day every year. Churches, restaurants, parks and picnic areas are crowded with families celebrating Moms. But for women and couples in the throes of difficult conception, trying very hard to become a Mom, it’s another assault on their already broken hearts. God bless the churches that do recognize, acknowledge and honor their members who are striving to build a bigger family. When they don’t, we have an alternative…
May 12 is Fertility Road Day. We meet the 2nd Sunday of every month. It’s a lovely alternative for women in the Washington, DC area to come for a couple of hours for stories, information, humor, tears, discussions of all-things-fertility and connecting with other women in the tribe. This special support group has been around for over a decade, holding sacred space for women trying to make sense of what’s happening in their body and in their lives.
So much of conception remains a mystery. We’ve learned from biology, the medical approach, the role of nutrients, the damage to the endocrine system by environmental toxins and the role that stress plays with our hormones. But we still don’t have all the answers. So we meet. We share lessons learned. We come up with strategies for enduring the “waits”. We try to understand what to do with the emotional explosions and hours of darkness, the waves of marital disagreements, loneliness, misunderstandings and the incredible love that brings you back together.
We still won’t have all the answers, but we sure know how to help each other along the road, offer rides to appointments, meet for tea, listen through the tears and make you laugh at some the absurdities we confront on Fertility Road. Join us this Sunday where there is strength in numbers, laughter in sadness and light in the darkness.
Register here to let me know that you’re coming (if you wake up Sunday morning and haven’t registered, come anyway): Fertility Road Registration.
If you’d like to bring a friend, a sister, or a Mom, that’s fine. This group is for women only.
