Spring Fertility Ritual
The Solstice and Equinox are time-honored cosmic events that mark seasonal transitions. Cultures world-wide have performed rituals that honor the power of these changes. You may think that rituals were primarily for agricultural reasons, but our ancestors recognized that humans are as much a part of nature as the woodlands, plants, water-sources and other creatures of the earth.
Rituals in our modern society focus more on social occasions like birthdays, weddings, funerals, holidays. I’m certainly missing some really important ones. But to give honor to Mother Nature, acknowledge her power and celebrate her gifts is a way for us to participate in a huge, cosmic world and create meaning in our tiny, little lives.
This is Day 1 of my ritual. Today I plant seeds for my summer garden. It’s a bit of a family tradition for me. My brother and sisters garden too. It’s a great way for us to stay connected AND feel a part of something much bigger. But if you’re new to gardening, just a pot and a grow light or window sill will do…
I encourage you to plant a seed, nurture it, watch it grow. Today, tomorrow, you’ve got weeks of Spring to begin! It can represent the seed that grows inside your mind or inside your womb. It’s a powerful and exciting thing to grow something. Let this (ritual, planting) open the way for you. Basil, lettuce, arugula, baby. It all starts with seeding, followed by nurturing.
May you AND your garden be fertile and flourish with the upcoming season!
